Yesterday, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) spoke to the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and continued his criticism of for-profit higher education, but non-profit higher education also got its share of criticism from Durbin.

71 college and university presidents from a mix of two-year and four-year public and private institutions (as well as Capella– the lone for-profit in the mix) have formed a new alliance. The Presidents’ Alliance calls for more robust and transparent measures of student learning. The signature piece of the Alliance will be a database where colleges will report their data. While this could increase transparency and encourage sharing of assessment methods among colleges, there is still the immense challenge of the variety in assessment to contend with.
